Comment Delay [Dec. 9th, 2009|09:06 pm]

I'm aware that people haven't been getting e-mail alerts for comments they receive, lately. The three on my last entry got delayed by at least a day.

Is that the same thing everyone else is experiencing? Is there news on when this'll get fixed?

Snow dusting

Fremont is having some really cold weather the last few days. For us, okay? It's early December and we've had snow happen up in the hills above Fremont. That very rarely happens. Now I know all you snow-land people will laugh at us; I doubt the temp has gone much below 30 degrees F, but it's really unusual to get snow at all, much less in early December. So I went for a drive to see if I could get up to the snow dusting level. :)

Very small art sale. [Dec. 8th, 2009|09:45 am]

[music |She & Him, "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?"]

I recently designed a limited-edition bookmark for Borderlands Books in San Francisco. This was awesome, and a lot of fun, but because I am in fact me, I went a little overboard and did four complete designs for them to choose from. Now I have three full-color marker illustrations that have no homes. I also have no idea what to charge for them, because they're each about eight times the size of an art card. So...here are the illustrations. Each is eleven inches by five and a half inches, Prismacolor marker and archival ink on acid-free paper. The odd lines that show about a quarter-inch into the pictures are from my non-repro blue pencil, which was used to mark the "bleed" zone—ideally, you'd want to frame using that line to tell you where the matting should be cut to stop.

Here you go:

Make me an offer. I'll leave this open until Friday, and will calculate postage according to where things are going/how fast you want them to get there.

ETA: All sold. Thanks to everyone who offered, I really appreciate it.

Song: Enchanting Song. [Dec. 7th, 2009|09:33 pm]

[Tags|, ]
[mood | ecstatic]
[music |Again, just guess.]

The madwomen say there's no reason to try,
That the ones who dream hardest are certain to die,
And they say that your dreams are all broken and wrong,
That claws hide inside the most beautiful song.

So tell old Mad Maudlin you won't be constrained
By the madwomen choosing to stay thus enchained,
And that nothing is right, and that nothing is wrong,
And follow the savage and enchanting song.

The maenads say there's no reason to stay,
That the only direction to go is away,
And they say that the road will be terribly long
If you choose to go chasing that beautiful song.

So tell Jenny Greenteeth that you are prepared,
That your heart is as steel, that you're not a bit scared,
And that all the best roads will seem terribly long
Pursuing the savage and enchanting song.

For beauties beheld when the eyes have been closed
Are the sort we build best when we're pinned and opposed,
And the way to construct them is just to stand strong
And follow your secret, most beautiful song.

So tell all the wicked girls you've come to fly,
And kiss all your fairy tale weakness goodbye,
And you'll crow, and you'll soar, and be lovely and strong,
And follow the savage and enchanting song.

Song: River-Girls. [Dec. 7th, 2009|09:09 pm]

[mood | accomplished]
[music |...oh, go on, now, guess.]

I never envied sailor men who fell in love with mermaids.
They were only courting trouble, loving daughters of the sea.
I would rather love a river-girl, who comes each night to harbor,
And dreams of compass roses, of the lighthouse, and of me.

I never envied sailor men who fell in love with sirens.
They were only chasing phantoms, they could never bring them home.
I would rather love a river-girl, whose kisses taste like violets,
Whose eyes are full of shadows, and whose hair is white as foam.

        And the daughters of the river still run wild and unconfined,
        And the harbor of their hearts is one that cannot be defined,
        In the shadow of the lighthouse, where the beacon burns so bright,
        I will wait until the tide has turned, and things are once more right.

I never envied sailor men who fell in love with selkies.
They were only stealing moments, hooking anchors in the air.
I would rather love a river-girl, as pale and calm as evening,
Who is fickle as the river, who is sweet beyond compare.

I never envied sailor men but now I understand them,
They were only being careful, building walls around their hearts,
But I chose to love a river-girl, believing I could hold her...
We are fools and we are foolish, and we each must play our parts.

        And the daughters of the river still run wild and unconfined,
        And the harbor of their hearts is one that cannot be defined,
        In the shadow of the lighthouse, where the beacon burns so bright,
        I will wait until the tide has turned, and things are once more right.

I never envied sailor men who fell in love with fables.
Now I wish that I could join them in their maritime romance.
But I chose to love a river-girl, and lost her when the tide changed.
Whether you love sea or river-girls, there's still no second chance.

        And the daughters of the river still run wild and unconfined,
        And the harbor of their hearts is one that cannot be defined,
        In the shadow of the lighthouse, where the beacon burns so bright,
        I will wait until the tide has turned, and things are once more right.

I never envied sailor men who fell in love with mermaids.
They were only courting trouble, loving daughters of the sea...

Open for Advent -- a list of fandoms. [Dec. 7th, 2009|07:37 am]

cadhla
[Tags|, ]
[mood | awake]
[music |Meatloaf, "Everything Louder Than Everything Else."]

The following are fandoms I can/will do for Advent. I've probably forgotten a lot of things, so feel free to request things that aren't here; I've intentionally omitted anything I've already done.

I won't do anything based in the InCryptid or Newsflesh universe this year, because I'm trying to avoid having my own private little spoiler-party. I won't do another Velveteen this year, as "Velveteen vs. The Holiday Special" just happened. While crossovers are possible, they're incredibly unlikely, as I try to keep Advent stories as short as possible.

To request a story, please comment on the current Advent entry, not this entry. Only questions about the fandoms list will be acknowledged on this entry.

Click here for the fandom list. )

For every "yes" there must be a little "no." So here's the fandoms I have zero familiarity with and hence won't write, ever:

* Babylon 5
* Battlestar Galactica
* CSI
* Dollhouse
* NCIS LA
* Pushing Daisies
* Sanctuary
* Sarah Conner
* Smallville
* Stargate (any)
* Sunny With a Chance

Again, please don't place requests on this post. This is informational, not consultational.

Whee!

Next Res [Dec. 7th, 2009|02:43 am]

rackstraw
Am thinking my next New Year's Resolution should address good communication and my tendency to avoid emotional confrontations. (Honesty should go without saying, at this point, but will address that too.)

Of course there are times when avoiding confrontation is just the right thing to do. Therefore "never avoid confrontation" should not be the resolution.

Got some thinking to do on this. Am open to suggestions.

Looking for German translation help. [Dec. 2nd, 2009|10:15 am]

[music |Weird Romance, "Amazing Penetration."]

The release of Winterfluch is coming up (January 2010). This is the German-language edition of Rosemary and Rue. In other news, yay!

I'd like to make a blog post to welcome folks around the release date, and while I realize most German readers also read English, it seems like it would be polite to make the post in German. Is there somebody who's willing to help me with translating a moderately-long blog post from English into German? I'm asking now so there's time to get it right before I'd need to post.

Thanks, guys.

A few notes about the Fannish Advent. [Dec. 2nd, 2009|08:43 am]

cadhla
[Tags|, , ]
[mood | awake]
[music |Lady Gaga, "Bad Romance."]

Since I only do this one a year, and people always have the same questions, here are a few notes on the Fannish Advent process. Because I care! Also because I'd rather not confuse people if I can avoid it.

Yes, you can suggest the same thing day after day without becoming annoying. I do one fandom a day; I don't repeat fandoms within the same year unless something really odd happens. This means that if you only suggest something once, and it's not the fandom I choose for the next day, it's not going to get used. I don't go back to previous days unless there's a day with no suggestions at all (which has actually never happened). Please feel free to comment every day with the fandom or fandoms you're hoping for.

No, this is not a democracy. Seconding or thirding a fandom does not make it more likely to be my selection for the next day. I write the daily advents based on a combination of "what I feel like writing right now" and "how interested I am by working in that universe." So twenty people saying "oh, yes, this" for something is actually not going to make it any more or less likely to be written.

I will not write fanfic for any literary work whose originator is on Livejournal and could potentially see this journal. That means no Tanya Huff, no Jim Hines, no Cat Valente, etc. I won't write them no matter how many times they're suggested, because that isn't even remotely fair to the original authors, who don't need to be put in the position of telling me to take something down.

I can't provide a full list of fandoms I will write, since there are so many and some of them are so obscure, but here are some fandoms I won't write, either because I'm not familiar with the source material or because I have nothing to say:

Babylon 5
Dollhouse
Farscape
Flash Forward
How I Met Your Mother
Lost
Mad Men
NCIS: Los Angeles
Sanctuary
Sarah Connor Chronicles
Stargate
Star Trek: DS9
Star Wars
Twilight
V (new series)

Hope this helps.
